Yes, if you are 16 years or older, you can apply for one of the learner’s licences available in South Africa.

Code 1: This is a learner’s licence for a motor cycle with or without a sidecar, tricycle (motorised) and quadrucycle. You will need to be at least 16 years old on the date of your test and your motorcycle engine should not be more than 125 cc. If your motorcycle is over 125 cc then you will have to wait till you are 17 years old before applying for a learner’s licence.

Code 2: This is a learner’s licence for motor vehicle including goods vehicle, minibus and bus. The gross vehicle mass should not be more than 3.5 tons (3500 kg). You will need to be at least 17 years old to apply for this learner’s licence.

Code 3: This is a learner’s licence for motor vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons (3500 kg). You will need to be at least 18 years old to apply for this licence.
