Learners Permits You Can Apply for in South Africa
There are three categories of learners permits you can apply for in South Africa. 
Getting your learners permit is the first step in getting to where you want to be. It is the first step you will need to take if you want to enjoy real freedom. Without a learners permit, you will always need someone to drive you around, but when you get your own drivers license you will have the freedom to go where you please. Of course, getting your learners permit and eventually your license means more responsibility. There are three categories of licenses that are classified as code 1, code 2 and code 3. Each has its own requirements.
Here is the list of learners permits you can apply for in South Africa:
Code 1 - Learners Permits
The code 1 learners permit is for motorcycles (with or without a sidecar), motorised tricycle or quadrucycle. The motorcycle engine should not exceed 125cc and you should be 16 or older on the date you take the test for your learners permit. If the motorcycle engine in above 125cc, you will need to be 17 years or older.
Code 2 – Learners Permit
The code 2 learners permit is for a motor vehicle, bus, minibus or goods vehicle with a gross vehicle mass not more than 3500kg. To apply for a learners’ license in this category you should be 17 years or older on the date of the test.
Code 3 – Learners Permit
The code 3 learners permit is for motor vehicles with a gross vehicle mass more than 3500kg. You will need to be 18 years or older to apply for a learners license in this category.
